Welcome to Theodore’s Path to Food Freedom

This may be the first step In our path to freedom of food allergies but it has been quite a long road that led us to this. So to begin this blog I think it’s important to start from the beginning.

Shorty after Theodore was born we knew something was hurting him. It started with random rashes which we were told was baby acne. He had a rash all around his eye which we were told was a clogged tear duct and eye infections. We were prescribed eye drops and ointments which didnt help. We were even referred to a specialist to consider surgery on his eye which thankfully we didn’t end up following through with. We were told multiple times it was likely not food related since I was breastfeeding and he was only a few months old and not eating anything himself. We were given different creams for his eye and prescription strength shampoo for his head but given no real answers. I remember being up night after night with him being so uncomfortable. He would literally roll around and rub/itch his skin until it bled. We resorted to him wearing a special sleep suit to keep him from itching and I would sit up with him at night nursing him and gently brushing his head as he fell back asleep.

After asking many times we were finally referred to an allergist and a few days later it was confirmed he was in fact allergic to many things. At this point I wanted to continue breastfeeding but without knowing what exactly he could be reacting to it could be a long road to get him feeling better so I opted to try formula to get him faster relief. After starting a special diary free formula we saw some improvement but I had a hunch he was still reacting to something in the formula. The allergist told me it likely was not the issue but I persisted. We switched him to a formula that was free from soy and dairy and within weeks he was almost eczema free.

Our sweet Theodore was finally happy and healthy, but this was just the beginning to our journey. We were advocating for our son the best we knew how yet still very uneducated and naïve to the life we now were living as parents to a child with food allergies.
